PMA campaigns to bring awareness to importance of manufacturing
July 2003
Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) has launched an awareness campaign to highlight the importance manufacturing brings to the United States. With PMA?s financial support, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) released a study conducted by Joel Popkin entitled ?Securing America?s Future: The Case for a Strong Manufacturing Base.?
The study covers the current condition of U.S. manufacturing and an outlook for the future. The report highlights several benefits of having a strong manufacturing base, including economic growth, research and development, productivity increases, higher paying jobs, a larger tax base for almost any community and a higher standard of living. However, according to the NAM study, the benefits of manufacturing are depleting at an alarming rate. The study found that American manufacturing has lost 2.3 million jobs since July 2000, many of which have been moved overseas. NAM states that the job losses are due to foreign countries that manipulate their currency, decreased spending on research and development, lack of a skilled workforce and the constant rising costs of health care, litigation and regulation.
The 43-page study is packed with data and statistics that are useful for companies that are actively trying to educate state and federal representatives on the importance of a strong and viable American manufacturing base. The study can be found www.nam.org.
